I love type. I embrace comprehensive design—print design is my favorite, but I’m also a WordPress ninja, social media marketer, and photoshop expert. My most satisfying work comes from connecting communities and companies in wonderfully, mutually beneficial ways. I like my work to be eye-catching and fantastic, yes, but I can’t stand allowing typos to print. I will forever hold in my heart the men and women who took me under their wings in the publishing and design industries. Many of us remain friends beyond cross country moves and job changes.

Designer, Drawing A Crowd, San Diego, CA 2006-Present

DAC began as a freelance venture, and quickly turned into a collaborative effort. I manage contractors and distribute projects for such clients as GNP Frame, Sacred Life Publishers, and Sakura
Gakuen Japanese Language School. I design websites and content, manage e-commerce assets, develop comprehensive branding, printed marketing, and publication design. A new addition to my skill set is social media marketing. I work directly with local and web based printing companies to ensure beautifully printed materials.

Art Director/Designer, Marcoa Publishing, San Diego, CA 2004-2006

I was a graphic designer in an eight-person production department including: editorial and advertising designers, paginators, pre-press analysts and quality control proof readers. I provided concept, design and art direction for the layout of military, residential, newcomer and relocation guides and promotion pieces. Reviewed all military publications for AP styles, design consistency, client specifications and general aesthetics before they were proofed out to the client. Proofread bluelines and expertly prepared documents for press, performed press checks for color and accuracy. Prepared interactive versions of all publications for digital distribution via the internet and CD-Roms. Converted advertiser listing information to be utilized as a database for web and phone applications.

Graphic Designer, The Day Publishing Co.–Creative Services Division, New London, CT 2002-2004

My days here began sitting at an extra desk producing all the real estate ads for the newspaper. I soon graduated to advertising design and small publication production. I spearheaded group projects as team lead for our 4 person design team. One of my favorite memories is my first trip to the HOW Design Expo in Boston.

Software: Adobe magician. Expert skills with Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Bridge. Also used QuarkExpress for many years. Microsoft Office Suite is a snap. Adept with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. On Mac I’m fluent with Mail, Pages and Numbers.

Hardware: I currently work on an iMac running OSX Yosemite with a 9.5 x 12” Wacom tablet, and a PC Laptop running Windows 8. I’m familiar with color profile issues for laser printers, inkjet and photo printers and have worked extensively on files for print on large presses. I dislike fax machines.

Design: I produce clean and tidy layouts that don’t disappoint. My typography is on point and I keep up with trends in my industry. I can handle everything from postcard design to entire 350 page books, I “scrub” photos habitually to ensure the best color and clarity for print. I take care to make my designs practical, so they don’t bog down computer systems, are compatible with client’s work flows and software. And my designs are beautiful.

Illustration: I’m an excellent free-hand artist in multiple mediums, and can create original work or duplicate the work of others in Illustrator or with a Copic marker.

Language: I am an excellent writer and communicator in English, I speak Japanese fluently and though I studied Spanish in school, I am embarrassingly barbaric in my abilities. I can hail a cab or follow a recipe, but definitely have trouble holding a true conversation.

Leadership and Teamwork: I’ve worked in many situations where I lead my team, and others where I’m a cog in the machine. I believe in diplomacy over victory, and am capable of dispelling conflict and keeping situations drama-free. I can follow the lead of others, take direction, handle criticism well and have the ability to dispense criticism without hurting feelings.
